The three-month deadline set by the Madras High Court Bench here on July 25 for the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) to crack the murder case of K.N. Ramajeyam, brother of former Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, comes to an end on Wednesday.
Passing interim orders on a petition filed by R. Latha Ramajeyam, the victim’s wife, seeking a CBI probe, Justice S. Nagamuthu had made it clear on July 25 that the three-month extension shall be the last opportunity given to the CB-CID for a breakthrough in the investigation.
“If the police do not make any progress by October 28, this court will be forced to transfer the investigation to the CBI,” the judge had said and directed CB-CID Superintendent of Police T.S. Anbu to be present in the court on October 28 and file a status report on the progress made by his team.
Unidentified assailants had abducted Ramajeyam during his morning walk at Thillai Nagar in Tiruchi on March 29, 2012, and hacked him to death. Though the body was recovered from a bush on the banks of the Cauvery near Thiruvalarsolai the same day, the police could not pin down the assailants.
Hence, Latha Ramajeyam moved the petition in December last with a plea to transfer the investigation to the CBI.
Opposing her plea, the CB-CID succeeded in getting the case adjourned on several occasions until the High Court said that the October 28-deadline would be the final chance given to it.
