HC summons Tirunelveli Collector

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday summoned Tirunelveli Collector and Corporation Commissioner after a public interest litigation petition complained of sewage water being let into the Tamirabharani.

A Division Bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S.S. Sundar took cognisance of the fact that a report on the same issue, which was earlier sought by the court, was not filed by the authorities. Issuing the summons, the court adjourned hearing by a week.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition by C. Katturaja of Tirunelveli, who sought a direction to the district authorities to prevent pollution of the Tamirabharani. He complained that sewage was being let into the river.

The court, in an earlier hearing, had sought a report from the district authorities on whether sewage was being let into the river and if preventive measures were followed to treat the sewage. The court also sought details on the number of treatment plants in Tirunelveli.
