MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday summoned the Thanjavur Collector to appear before it on January 10 for failing to act against a textile showroom constructed in deviation of approved plan and in violation of safety rules.

A Division Bench of Justices K.K. Sasidharan and P.D. Audikesavalu directed the Collector and the Kumbakonam Municipal Commissioner to appear for failing to act against the silk showroom. The court directed the authorities to bring all the files connected to the building.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed in 2017 by A. Selvaraj, a resident of Kumbakonam. The petitioner said Chennai Silks showroom in Kumbakonam was built in violation of rules and regulations.

He alleged that the construction of the building was in violation of the Town and Country Planning Act and the Fire Safety Rules, and complained that the showroom lacked exit points and emergency outlets.

He sought a direction to the authorities concerned to act against the illegal construction.
