MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday granted a compensation of ₹12.20 lakh to the family of a lorry driver from Madurai who was electrocuted to death in 2014.

Justice G.R. Swaminathan ordered the State to grant a compensation of ₹6.20 lakh to the widow of the deceased and the remaining amount to their three children.

The widow of the lorry driver, A. Kannan, said her husband required to travel across the State as part of his job. During an assignment, he was asked to travel to Ramanathapuram. On the way, he parked the lorry on the roadside and got down to attend the call of nature. He came into contact with a low-lying electric wire and was killed instantly.

The woman had sought an appropriate compensation from the State government as she was finding it hard to make ends meet.
