Observing that arches had nothing to do with sanctity of religious structures, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday paved the way for Kodaikanal Municipality to remove six arches from religious structures in Kodaikanal.

A Division Bench of Justices T. S. Sivagnanam and R. Tharani observed that putting up such arches was only to satisfy the ego of the parties involved. They were put up in encroachment of public road causing hindrance to the public and the view of religious structures.

The court was hearing a petition filed by B. Murali from Kodaikanal who sought a relief against the demolition of the arch of Mariamman Temple.

Taking cognisance of the fact that there were six such arches of temples, mosques and churches, the court said the State should take a call within 15 days, if not Kodaikanal Municipality could go ahead and demolish the arches.
