The district police have arrested four persons, all from Vandiyur, in connection with a highway robbery at Vadipatti in the small hours of Friday.

The police said that the gang approached B. Mariappan (23) of Muthukulathor, a lorry driver, who along with cleaner Satheeshkumar, was sleeping in the truck parked on the Dindigul Highway at Vadipatti.

The gang, which had come in an autorickshaw, picked a quarrel with the driver claiming that the truck had hit the autorickshaw. They accused Mariappan of having not stopped the vehicle after the accident.

Even as the driver and the cleaner were wondering as to what was happening, the gang members started beating them up. Later, they snatched Rs. 1,300 and a cellphone from them and fled in the vehicle. The incident took place around 2.30 a.m.

Vadipatti police registered a case, and arrested P. Kottaichamy (40), D. Murugan (24), M. Marimuthu (34) and M. Muthukrishnan (27).
