Writer Cho. Dharman’s novel ‘Koogai,’ which documented the life of Arunthathiyar in post-independent India must be banned and its production stopped forthwith, said Puratchi Pulikal Iyakkam here on Monday.

Its members led by its district secretary A. Chittiran attempted to burn the novel at the Collectorate but were stopped by the police. ‘Koogai,’ set in Thoothukudi district’s Urulaikudi, was published in Tamil in 2005 and recently translated into English as ‘The owl.’ The members of the movement said the novel portrayed Arunthathiyar women in poor light and depicted them as immoral.

In their petition, Mr. Chittiran said that several writers had been attempting to tarnish the image of Arunthathiyar community. Legal action must taken against Mr. Dharman, the petiton said.
