Floral tributes marked the 289th birth anniversary celebration of ‘Veeramangai’ Velu Nachiyar here on Thursday.

Minister for Khadi and Village Industries Board G. Baskaran garlanded the statue of Velu Nachiyar at her memorial at Soorakulam in Kalayarkoil block and paid homage at an official function.

Collector J. Jayakanthan, Superintendent of Police T. Jayachandran, leaders of various political parties and people from various walks of life paid floral tributes to the queen of Sivaganga on the occasion. District Revenue Officer G. Latha, Sivaganga Revenue Divisional Officer Selvakumari and former MLAs Muruganandam and Chandran were among the others who paid tributes.

Velu Nachiyar (1730-1796) was the first revolutionary queen who opposed the British rule in India.
