Fire and Rescue Services personnel displayed their prowess and different rescue materials and equipment that could help save people in danger at a drill conducted for officials and staff of Government Rajaji Hospital here on Tuesday.

Besides demonstrating simple ways of putting out fire in houses and offices, the fire fighters, led by Deputy Director (South) P. Saravanan, showcased their Bronto skylift that can reach to a height of 115 feet to fight fire and rescue people from high-rise buildings.

“We want to create awareness among people that our men can come to the rescue of people not only during fire, but also during other emergencies like getting stuck inside locked houses and vehicles that meet with accidents, and malfunctioning of lifts,” Mr. Saravanan said.

He added that such programmes would also urge people to alert Fire and Rescue Services personnel without wasting time. “Many a time, information about fire or other emergency situation is routed to fire stations through police control room or 108 ambulance service, which results in delay in providing succour,” he added.

District Fire Officer S. Kalyanakumar explained to the medical officers, nurses and other supporting staff like drivers and security personnel the causes of fire and the easy ways of extinguishing it. He demonstrated the use of different types of fire extinguishers for different types of fuel or materials that are on fire.

It was followed by a demonstration of fire extinguishers and other rescue equipment like iron cutter, concrete cutter, air lift bag, power saw, breathing apparatus and firemen suit.

The officials also created awareness of the importance of keeping ready fire-fighting equipment like fire extinguisher, sprinklers, smoke detectors and multiple circuit breaker.

Station Fire Officer (Tallakulam) Pon. Thirumurugan and his team were involved in the demonstration.
