An aged trader N. Inbamoorthi, 69, his wife, Thilagavathi, and their son, Kannan 40, died on Monday after they consumed poison at their house in Periyavallakulam under Soolakkarai Police station limit on Sunday night.

Police said that neighbours had found the father and son dead and the woman lying unconscious only on Monday morning. Thilagavathi was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital, but died on the way.

Police said Inbamoorthi and his son were running into Coriander business. The father had left a note in which he accused one M.S. Manickavel of having cheated him to several lakhs of rupees. He had appealed to the authorities that the money owed by Manickavel should be retrieved and handed over to his daughter-in-law.

The Soolakkarai police have registered a case of abetment to commit suicide against Manickavel, his wife, Sornalatha, and his parents. They have also been booked for cheating, criminal breach of trust and criminal intimidation.

The police said that Manickavel, who was a broker for foodgrains business, had misused a few cheques Inbamoorthi had given to him. No arrest has been made so far.

Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.
