Fake certificate issue: CBI enquiry sought

December 26, 2013 12:24 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 06:09 pm IST - MADURAI:

Shocked at the surfacing of fake birth and death certificates bearing the official seal of Madurai Corporation, an advocates’ wing had decided to approach the Madras High Court Bench here pleading for investigation by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

When the High Court reopens after vacation on January 3, a Public Interest Litigation will be filed by Anti-Corruption Advocates Wing seeking CBI probe in to how fake certificates for prominent persons are being issued and whether there is any systemic failure.

The decision to file a writ in HC Bench comes in the wake of a fake birth certificate in the name of Aam Aadmi Party founder and Delhi Chief Minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal which was released to the media on Monday.

“While genuine people are waiting for days together to get birth or death certificate from Madurai Corporation, it is shocking that fake certificates in the names of a Minister, MLA and Mr.Kejriwal have surfaced in the last two months. We fear that there could be a scam in this and approaching the High Court for investigation is the only way out,” S.Muthukumar, general secretary of Anti-Corruption Advocates Wing, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

According to him, an enquiry by CBI alone can bring out truth since the Corporation authorities themselves have admitted that entries were not properly made for the birth and the death certificates issued a few months ago.

Fake certificates issued bearing names of Minister Sellur K.Raju, MLA R.Annadurai and Mr.Kejriwal will be submitted to the Court.

“Those who were involved in this certificate racket should be punished and that will be possible only by the CBI through High Court direction. This issue involves national security too since those who obtain fake birth certificates can apply for passports,” Mr.Muthukumar said.

The association had demanded that the Corporation could no longer neglect the matter as fake certificates are as serious as counterfeit currency notes.
