“There is a growing number of contract employees in Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation and most of them do not get minimum wages,” said State general secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) G. Sukumaran.
He was addressing media persons at the seventh State-level conference of Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Union here on Sunday, during which nine office-bearers were inducted.
Mr. Sukumaran demanded that all contract employees be paid the minimum wage of ₹ 18,000 fixed by the Seventh Pay Commission. “The aim is to ensure that all workers are made permanent employees and get decent salaries and basic benefits. This is lacking currently,” he said.
He added the Computer Operations department of the Corporation often hired several people, mostly women, on contract basis but hardly paid them the basic pay and gave them leave for a minimum number of days. “They do not have even toilet facilities,” he said.
To highlight these issues, the CITU would organise a protest at the Secretariat in Chennai on September 25, he said.
Mr. Sukumaran also stated that a rally with farmers and agricultural labourers from across the country would be held in Delhi on September 5 condemning the drastic increase in prices of essential commodities, improper functioning of the public distribution system and improper implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
