MADURAI

The wives of two key accused in the murder of AIADMK functionary L. Ramesh Babu have filed petitions before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, fearing that their husbands could be killed in fake encounters by the police. The accused are currently lodged in Tiruchi Central Prison.

Vidhya, wife of Arun Prabhu, and Bharathi, wife of Parthiban, sought a direction for videographing of their being remanded. They also sought a direction for grant of permission to allow the counsel representing the accused to accompany them while they are transported from Tiruchi Central Prison to the lower court for trial.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh directed notice to Sirkazhi police and adjourned the case for further hearing. L. Ramesh Babu, AIADMK student wing secretary of Kollidam union and a confidant of Minister for Handlooms and Textiles O.S. Manian, was attacked by a gang with lethal weapons at Tirupurasundari Nagar in Nagapattinam on July 24. He died on the spot.
