Members of Paruthikottai Nattar Nala Sangam, spearheading by-poll boycott protest, detained eight persons, all belonging to the DMK and the Congress, with cash when they tried to distribute money to voters on Thursday.

As the State government is yet to take any decision on issuing gazette notification recognising seven caste sub-sects as ‘Devendrakula Velaalar’ as demanded by the Puthiya Thamizhagam, Thamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam and other caste outfits, they have announced that they would boycott the by-poll at Nanguneri and Vikravandi.

Though ministers tried to pacify leaders of these outfits, the move is yet to get any positive result even as the date of polling is approaching fast. So, DMK and Congress leaders, who have camped here for by-poll work for the past two weeks, tried to use this strained relationship between the AIADMK and caste outfits.

Youth detained eight persons with cash, all in ₹ 2,000 denomination and election campaign pamphlets carrying photographs of Congress candidate ‘Ruby’ R. Manoharan.

Though they informed flying squads and other officials about the detention, none turned up.

Later, Durai, Sub-Inspector of Police, Moolaikkaraipatti, came to hold talks with the youth, who were determined in their demand for registration of case against them besides seizing the cash.
