A couple were killed when a van hit the two-wheeler they were riding pillion near Viralipatti junction on the Dindigul Highway on Friday evening. The bike-rider, M. Kumar (45), is seriously injured and admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital.

M. Dhandapani (50) and Selvi (40), who were working as guards at a farm in Viralipatti, were on their way to Vadipatti. While walking on the road, they sought the help of Mr. Kumar of Bommanpatti to drop them at Vadipatti.

While the trio were going on the bike, Mr. Kumar attempted to cross the four-way highway at Viralipatti junction, and the speeding van knocked them down around 7.15 p.m. Selvi was killed on the spot, and Dhandapani died on the way to Vadipatti Government Hospital.

Meanwhile, people of Viralipatti staged a road roko, demanding a flyover at the junction citing frequent accidents. They blocked the road demanding that the Tahsildar should come to the spot and promise construction of the flyover. Superintendent of Police Vijendra Bidari and Deputy Superintendent of Police E. Manirathinam, along with revenue officials, held talks with the agitators.

After two hours, the agitators dispersed as the officials promised to take up road improvement works by prevailing upon the officials of the National Highways Authority of India.
