Counselling unit for rural students

Indian Red Cross Society, Madurai, has inaugurated a new counselling unit called Vaanga Pesalam (Come Let's Talk) at the Government Higher Secondary School, Paravai,on Monday. The unit was inaugurated by V. Pugalagiri, Chairman, Vadamalyan Hospitals in the presence of V. M. Jose, secretary, IRCS.

The unit will function from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., students of the school and villagers could avail the facilities of the counselling centre on issues such as depression, suicidal thoughts, smoking and alcohol dependence. The unit will counsel and if needed guide them to psychiatrists at Government Hospital for further care, says a press release.

Fatima College's Department of Social Work has joined hands with Indian Red Cross for this project and they will be handling the unit. The Head of Department of Social Work will be in-charge of the unit.

MSW students of Fatima College have joined as volunteers to create mental health awareness. Sankar from Aakam Foundation explained that students should be aware of their mental health. Preethi, psychiatrist explained about the mental health during adolescence.

Mithra, Head, Department of Social Work, Fatima College proposed a vote of thanks and Malliga, Head Mistress, Government HSS was appreciated by the members for providing space to start the unit.
