Corporation Commissioner V.P. Jeyaseelan on Monday sent letters to around 1.5 lakh residents to create awareness of the importance of water conservation.

In the letter, which begins with a Thirukkural, he has stressed the importance of creating rainwater harvesting structures in each building.

Percolation of rainwater had come down drastically due to urbanisation. He has asked the people to set up rainwater harvesting pits with three feet depth and 12 inches in diameter, filled with gravel and sand wherever possible, within their plots. If they were set up near borewells and open wells, it would help recharge the groundwater, he said. Town Planning Officer Maran and Executive Engineer Ruban Suresh Ponniah were present.
