In a surprise raid in Sellur on Wednesday, officials of Labour Department rescued a child worker from a company making iron meshes. The raid conducted by the Deputy Inspector of Labour, Sathish Kumar, along with police personnel from Juvenile Police Unit, raided the company around noon. They found three children working at the spot. However, only one of them was 13 years of age.
“Employing children below the age of 14 years was an offence under the Child Labour Act. We rescued the boy, who has no parents, and handed him over to the Child Welfare Committee,” the Inspector of Labour, J. Kalidas, said.
He added that the Collector L. Subramanian has instructed the officials to conduct such raids at frequent intervals to eradicate child labour.
