The younger son of DMK candidate for Tirunelveli constituency S. Gnanathiraviam was arrested along with four others while they were allegedly distributing cash to the voters here on Wednesday night.

Besides seizing ₹ 2.39 lakh from him, the Flying Squad led by Ananthakumar, also recovered 12 postal ballots from the car in which they were roaming around.

Police sources said a flying squad that rushed to Karuppanthurai near Tirunelveli Junction following information on distribution of cash to voters, nabbed five persons around 7 p.m. While two of them were allegedly distributing cash to the voters, the remaining three were sitting in a Sports Utility Vehicle parked nearby.

On frisking all the five, the flying squad members seized ₹ 2.39 lakh from the duo. As 12 postal ballots were reportedly found inside the car where the three others were sitting, they were also taken to the Tirunelveli Junction police station for interrogation.

The duo distributing cash to the voters was identified as G. Dhinakaran, 33, younger son of DMK candidate for Tirunelveli constituency S. Gnanathiraviam, and his driver Naveen Jayaprakash, 21, of Aavaraikulam near Valliyoor.

Others were identified as N. Bhaskar, 40, of Konganthaanpaarai near Palayamkottai, N. Esakkiappan, 42, of Aavaraikulam and Durai, 37, of Moontradaippu.
