Workshop on GST

The Department of Commerce of American College, in association with the office of the Commissioner of GST and Central Excise, organised a workshop highlighting the current implementation of GST, on July 5. M. Davamani Christober, Principal, in his inaugural address, spoke about the evolution of taxation structure. “GST is not a new tax, but a reform in the taxation system. It was introduced by clubbing of different taxes that existed previously to eliminate the confusion in tax collection,” said V. Pandiraja, Joint Commissioner of Central GST and Central Excise. Head of the Department A. Martin David and professors J. Justin Manohar, S.C.B. Samuel Anbu Selvan and R. Mary Sophia Chitra were present.

American College Rotaract Club and Rotary Club of Madurai West organised a blood donation camp on the occasion of Doctor’s Day on July 2. More than 150 students donated blood. The blood bank of Government Rajaji Hospital oversaw the proceedings.

Induction programme

Madura College conducted a week-long induction programme for first-year students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Sankara Iyer Hall. Over 500 students participated in the programme and the students were elaborated on extracurricular activities, NCC and NSS activities, which formed part of the curriculum. J. Suresh, Principal, said that courses offered by the college were unique. The students were elaborated on the importance of discipline, punctuality, and integrity. Eminent speakers from different fields were invited to motivate students.

Workshop on aesthetics

The postgraduate and research department of English of Thiagarajar College organised a workshop on Indian aesthetics recently. Sudhir Kumar, professor of English of Punjab University, said that there was no need to hate English language and revulsion was against the hegemony of the language. Mr. Sudhir Kumar also elaborated on the uniqueness of Tholkappiyam, Agathiyam, Thirukkural, and Arthashastra and highlighted the contribution of South India to the Indian aesthetics. C.S. Jayaraman, professor of Visual Media of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kerala, said that Indian art was based on proportion, balance, and harmony. He also urged the students to start investing time for research in Indian literature. D. Pandiaraja, Principal, inaugurated the workshop. Uma Kannan, vice-president of the college, said the programme would enlighten the students about the importance of preserving Indian traditions.

Freshers’ Day

Ambika College of Arts and Science for Women celebrated Freshers’ Day on July 4. R. Raja Govindasamy, former principal of Thiagarajar College, was the chief guest. S.A. Razeeda, Principal, motivated the students to face challenges in life. She said the students must be self-reliant. N.M. Ganesan, director of the college, and heads of the departments were present.

Students’ union

N.M.S Sermathai Vasan College for Women inaugurated student’s union on July 3. G. Maris Kumar, president of the college, delivered the presidential address. D. Karthiga Rani, Principal, led the installation ceremony. R. Dhanalakshmi, III year student of the department of Bachelors of Commerce, proposed the vote of thanks.

New course

Annai Fathima Group of Institutions signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chemmanur International Jewellers to launch a new course in jewellery management on July 5. Boby Chemmanur, managing director of the jewellery store, emphasised that love, knowledge, and dedication were the essential attributes to attain goals in life. He informed the students about the project, ‘Students’ Start-Up’ in which six students will be selected as ambassadors and given training. M.S. Sha, chairman of the college, also presided over the function.

Orientation programme

Subbulakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science conducted an orientation programme for first- year students on July 1. B. Ramamoorthy, Principal, highlighted the importance of higher education and encouraged the students to work hard. R.L. Ramnath said parents and teachers must guide students to reach greater heights in life. The Heads of various departments explained the facilities and infrastructure available at the college. Around 350 first-year students along with their parents participated in the meeting.

Sports meet

Fatima Michael College of Engineering and Technology conducted ‘Flame Fest 2019,’ an inter-school sports and cultural extravaganza. The event which was held on June 27 and 28, was held exclusively for Plus One and Plus Two students. Students from various schools across Madurai and Sivaganga districts participated in sports events such as kabaddi and cricket. The students also exhibited their talents in cultural events such as group dance, solo singing, and dumb charade. Velammal Residential School in Ladanendal won the overall shield.

Yoga Day and Father’s Day

International Yoga Day and Father’s Day was celebrated in Swami Vivekananda Vidyamandir Senior Secondary School. Members of Prajapita Brahma Kumaris took part in the event and highlighted the importance of yoga. The students also performed yogasanas and practised meditation. During the celebration of Father’s Day, the fathers came with their children and participated in various games.

67th anniversary

Fatima College celebrated its 67th Annual Day with grandeur on July 2. Fr. Antony John Kennedy, director of the Diocesan De-Addiction Centre, was the chief guest. In his address, Fr. Kennedy highlighted that the college served as a platform for students to fulfil their goals in life. He said that prayer, humility, desire to serve the people, and discernment were the principles the college wanted to instil in its students. He also appealed to the students that along with wisdom, the students must uphold moral values to lead a successful life.

English Club

Velammal College of Engineering and Technology inaugurated VCET English Literature Club on July 6. Vice-Chairman of Velammal Education Trust, Ganesh Natrajan, delivered the presidential address. Principal N. Suresh Kumar, in his address, said the club would help in improving the communication skills of students. G. Vasudevan, director of the Fortune Pandiyan Hotel, was the chief guest. He narrated his personal experience to highlight how language skills helped students reach greater heights in life.
