An accidental fire in a house at Vijayakarisalkulam, claimed the life of M. Saran Naveen (5) on Friday night.

His elder brother, Balamurugan (8) sustained minor injuries.

While the family members claimed that fire while cooking food led to the accident at around 8.30 p.m., the police are enquiring whether any illegal stocking of fuses, meant for crackers, in the house led to the fire and death.

“Vijayakarisalkulam is known for illegal wrapping of black fuses in white papers at home. Hence, our probe is going on to confirm whether any such illegal stocking had claimed the life of the boy,” Superintendent of Police M. Rajarajan said.

The boy who sustained grievous injuries was rushed to the Government Hospital in Sivakasi.

However, he died on the way.

Police sources said that when the family members tried to take the body back home, police intervened and took the body to the Government Hospital in Sattur.

“The house looked like cleaned thoroughly after the accident which raises suspicion of a possible accident due to stocking of fuses,” the SP said. Some of the fireworks units give black fuses for wrapping in white paper illegally in houses in the village, the police said.

Vembakottai police are investigating.
