Bar Council denies enrolling criminals

June 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - MADURAI:

The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has denied allegations of its office-bearers having enrolled a host of criminals as lawyers by accepting law degrees purchased by them from colleges in the neighbouring States without attending regular classes.

The averment was made in a counter affidavit filed before the Madras High Court Bench here in reply to a public interest litigation petition challenging prescription of no age limit to pursue LLB courses offered by Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University in Chennai.

In the counter submitted before Justices S. Manikumar and V.M. Velumani on Monday, BCTP secretary V. Dakshanamoorthy took strong exception to the allegation that its office-bearers were turning a blind eye to the entry of criminals in the legal profession to gain electoral advantage.

“The PIL petitioner has made reckless and deplorable allegations… This allegation is totally baseless… The Bar Council is strictly following all terms and conditions contained under the Advocates Act,” the counter affidavit read.
