Awareness programme on jellyfish

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here organised an awareness-cum-interactive session on ‘Is jellyfish, a resource or nuisance to marine fisheries’ for the benefit of postgraduate and research students on Tuesday to commemorate the ‘World Jellyfish Day.’

Principal Scientist and Scientist-in-charge, Thoothukudi Research Centre, ICAR-CMFRI P. P. Manojkumar, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, P. Velayutham, and Principal Scientist I. Jagadis spoke.

The training programme was attended by 25 postgraduate students and research scholars from five colleges from Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts.

A series of lectures in taxonomy, production and nutrition profiles on jellyfish species were delivered.

As a part of interactive session, the shore seine fisherman from Therespuram shared his experience on the impact of jellyfish swarms on fishing operations and a jellyfish exporter from Tharuvaikulam shared his knowledge on processing and export details to the participants.
