One of the three accused in the audiotape scam case, V. Murugan, Assistant Professor of Madurai Kamaraj University, on Tuesday expressed apprehension that his extended imprisonment in connection with the case without bail was an attempt to force him to end his life.

He was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court II here, along with the prime accused in the case, Nirmala Devi, and former MKU research scholar Karuppasamy, for remand extension. While being escorted by the police to the vehicle from the first floor of the court complex, Murugan shouted that there should be a “fair” enquiry in the case. “I should have my say legally. It looks like I am made to languish in jail to the extent that I will be forced to commit suicide. You should know who would benefit from my prolonged imprisonment,” he said.

He said he was ready to accept if the court found him guilty in the case filed in connection with an alleged attempt by Nirmala Devi, Assistant Professor (hence suspended) of Devanga Arts College in Aruppukottai to lure four college girls into doing some favours for higher officials of the MKU in return for higher marks and monetary benefits.

The audio tape of her conversation with the students led to the arrest of the trio.

Murugan’s wife M. Suja had earlier alleged that her husband was being made a scapegoat in the case to shield “powerful” people in the university.

The CB-CID, which has been probing the case, has already filed the preliminary charge-sheet. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has instructed the investigating agency to file supplementary charge-sheet before September 10.
