In yet another complaint of violation of model code of conduct for elections, cases were booked against nine persons, including two candidates, in Usilampatti sub-division, on Thursday.

There was information that a group of persons had planned to get their candidates elected unopposed — that the supporters, including one woman candidate's husband, had forced other candidates from not filing their nominations. As there was plan to “buy” all other potential candidates in the Ayyampatti and surrounding villages, the police swung into action. Based on inquiries, the Madurai Rural Police registered cases against nine persons, including two candidates — Kumar (37), son of Chinna Thevar of Pannaipatti; Jayasudha, wife of Kumar; Kasi Mayan (47), son of Karutha Kannan of Ayyampatti; Thangadurai of Kalyanipatti; Jayakodi (60), son of Muthu Kannu Thevar; and Karuppa Thevar (70), son of Periyakaruppan of Ayyampatti among others.

Feast for voters

In another case, the police registered cases against supporters of a candidate who offered a feast to the villagers of Senthamangalam panchayat in Alanganallur union. According to the complaint, candidate Veeranan alias Kakkayan of Ponthugampatti was serving food to his “guests.” Palamedu police rushed to the spot and stopped the feast. A case was booked against the candidate.

In other cases, a candidate, Pasupathi, son of Thangaraj of Mudalaikulam panchayat, had prepared ‘biriyani' and when he was about to serve it to the villagers, he was caught by the Chekkanoorani police. The vehicle used for transporting the food to a nearby marriage hall was seized.

Ruby, wife of Ganesan of Kosavapatti, had filed her nomination papers and invited a large number of voters to the marriage hall for lunch.

Tirumangalam police registered a case against a woman candidate, Sangeetha, wife of Sundarapandi of Maravankulam, for arranging feast for voters. She is contesting for the post of panchayat president.

Superintendent of Police Asra Garg said complaints of these nature would be investigated and action taken.
