As a part of the World Environment Day celebrations, Soroptimist International Madurai will initiate a campaign for adoption of biodegradable plastic bags by various stakeholders on June 5.
Addressing a press meet, Latha Abiruben, president of SI Madurai, said that they would bring together stakeholders from the health care industry, fireworks manufacturing industry, textiles industry and popular eateries and restaurants who would convert to using biodegradable plastic bags.
“Through this initial step, we hope that we can make a difference in the amount of plastics used. Plastic bags of low quality are non-biodegradable and pose a serious threat to the environment,” she said.
Valli Arunachalam, publicity officer, said that the Environment Day celebrations, titled ‘New Earth,’ would also have a ‘Green Walk’ on Saturday morning from the District Sports Centre on Race Course Road, in which college and school students as well as the general public would participate.
“We have also organised a free pollution check for vehicles and saplings will be planted at Gandhi Memorial Museum and the Racecourse sports centre,” she said. The celebrations are being sponsored by Lakshmi Vilas Bank.
