It was a trip down memory lane for the students and teachers who were part of the 1959 entry batch of the Thiagarajar College of Engineering as they caught up with one another, reminisced about their college days and shared anecdotes about their college life at their class reunion on the college premises on Saturday.
“We are all so happy to interact and catch up after more than 50 years. Despite meeting after such a gap, we all feel that the friendship and camaraderie we had while we were in college have not lessened or changed in any way,” said S. Rajagopal, former professor at TCE who was also a student of the entry batch.
Mr. Rajagopal, who was one of the organisers of the reunion, said that around 40 of their batchmates had come for the reunion, accompanied by their spouses and children.
“One of our batchmates who had recently undergone a surgery has made it today to the reunion despite being unwell. This is how enthusiastic we all are about meeting up after so long,” he said.
S. Gopalakrishnan called the reunion, an experience he won’t forget for years to come. “The country was going through a major overhaul and was working towards development in the early 60s when we all passed out. Many batchmates have contributed so significantly to the growth and development of society and have been extremely successful,” he noted.
During an interaction, K.S. Ramakrishnan, who was a former mathematics professor at the college in 1959 and then went on to become an IAS officer, reminisced about the campus infrastructure and the evolution since then.
Stating that they had to look at their nametags which carried photos of themselves from the 1960s to recognise one another, N. Vedachalam, distinguished professor, Department of Space and Padma Shri awardee, said that the reunion had been memorable and enjoyable for him and his batchmates.
Principal Abhai Kumar gave a presentation to the alumni on the present functioning of the college and the various facets. Chairman and Correspondent Karumuttu T. Kannan addressed the gathering.
