Tamil Nadu Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Mr. K Radhakrishnan has said that the State has carried out the maximum number of preventive detentions in the country, with detainees under Goondas Act alone accounting for 1500 in this year so far.
Talking to newsmen here on Monday, he said, the fire at a cracker godown at Pallipattu last week, where 32 people were killed, was due to carelessness of the owners of the godown.
He said that it was important to educate workers of fireworks factories in handling explosive chemicals carefully. “Police was closely monitoring and taking action against those factories which were illegally storing chemicals or manufacturing fireworks without licence,” he said.
Cases were registered against 350 fireworks store houses which did not have proper licence or violated various norms in surprise checks that were conducted.
The ADGP was here for reviewing arrangements for Thevar jayanthi celebrations falling on October 30.
He said 5000 police personnel would be deployed at various places on October 29 and 30, when various political leaders would pay homage to Thevar at Pasumpon village.
