Seven members of a gang of confidence tricksters were arrested on Wednesday on the charge of cheating businessmen and industrialists of Rs. nine lakh by promising to give them American Dollars and gold biscuits at “unimaginably low price”.

Police, who received a series of complaints about the gang which operated at several places in Madurai district, said they arrested two members of the gang here on suspicion.

Their interrogation revealed that nine persons were involved in cheating the businessmen and others. Police later arrested five more gang members while the other two were absconding. A car used by the gang had been seized.

The modus operandi of the gang differed from place to place. In one place, they had convinced a businessman that they were in distress and had offered to sell gold at a cheap rate and taken money from him. But they had cheated him later by giving a small quantity of gold and promising to come with more later.
