Mild to moderate showers in Dindigul and nearby areas, and in Kodaikanal brought mercury level down sharply and cheered farmers, especially horticulturists and floriculturists.

The summer showers will benefit long-term crops and horticulture crops. It will also help the farmers in rain-fed areas prepare the field and start sowing.

Dindigul city experienced mild showers on Sunday evening, with sky remaining mostly overcast. Vedasandur too received sharp showers, coupled with strong wind.

Sanarpatti and Gopalpatti experienced heavy rain for about two hours.

Heavy rain rocked Natham and nearby areas on Saturday evening. Low-lying areas were waterlogged in Natham. Water flooded into Natham fire service office. Power supply was snapped in the town and nearby villages on Saturday night.

Kodaikanal and the surrounding areas received moderate showers on Sunday morning and in the afternoon. The climate was very cool, cheering tourists thronging the hill station in the last weekend of the summer season.

Theni

The farmers in Theni district too heaved a sigh of relief as the catchment of Periyar dam received rain for the past three days. With poor storage (110.8 feet) in the dam, the PWD officials hesitated to release water for irrigation of first crop in double-cropping areas in Cumbum Valley.

Water was not released from the dam on June 1, the scheduled date for water release this year owing to poor storage.
