Nine buses damaged in Usilampatti

Windscreens of at least nine buses and two other vehicles were damaged during stone throwing incidents in Usilampatti on Friday. Five persons sustained minor injuries.

The police said some opersons proceeding to Paramakkudi to pay homage to the Dalit leader, Immanuel Sekaran on his death anniversary had shouted slogans while passing through Usilampatti. Some locals started pelting stones.

Angered by this, those in the vans pelted stones at buses on the Madurai-Theni highway. The Madurai Deputy Inspector General of Police K. Balasubramanian rushed to the spot along with the Madurai Superintendent of Police M. Manohar. He said 35 persons were suspected to be involved in the violence have been picked up. Police personnel have been deployed at Usilampatti and the situation was under control, he said.
