A modern closed circuit television network with 28 cameras and a parcel x-ray scanner were inaugurated as part of the Integrated Security System (ISS) at Madurai railway junction on Wednesday.
The Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer, Southern Railway, S. Manohar, the Chief Security Commissioner, V.K. Dhaka, and the Madurai Divisional Railway Manager, A.K. Rastogi, were present.
The two x-ray scanners – one for personal baggage checking and another for parcel checking - have been integrated with the surveillance system so that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at the control room could watch the materials scanned.
When all the 68 cameras, as proposed, are installed the movement of people in every nook and corner of the railway premises could be monitored.
Besides the facility to zoom in, some of the cameras could be rotated 360 degrees. The system would have facility to store the video data for 30 days.
On installation of some advanced video analytical features, the system would detect deserted objects on platforms and raise alarm.
Similarly, it could detect intrusion of people on cordoned off areas and detect over-crowding of people in a particular place and raise alarms.
The system would raise alarm whenever the cameras are tampered with.
Under-vehicle scanning system to monitor and record under carriage images of vehicles in motion, driver image capturing and vehicle number plate recognition system and advanced equipment for bomb detection and disposal squad would be introduced later as part of the ISS.
The Additional Divisional Railway Manager (in-charge), T. Venkatasubramanian, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Govindappa Raj, and Divisional Security Commissioner, S. Balasubramanian, were present.
