Identity cards distributed to SHGs

Self-help groups were issued identity cards at the gram sabha meeting held here on 61st Republic Day at Thiruppalai Panchayat coming under Madurai West Panchayat Union.

N. Mathivanan, Collector, said that Madurai district has 13,120 self-help groups and in the first phase 5,726 groups have been identified out of which 3,207 groups were from rural areas and 2,519 were from urban areas.

The first phase involves distribution of identity cards in rural areas and on Tuesday, Rohini Ramadas, Assistant Collector (Training), issued ID cards to 6 SHGs based in Thiruppalai. Distribution of cards in urban areas would start from January, 30.

The identity card which is twice the size of a ration card has photographs of all the members of the group with address and also includes details like bank account number, total savings, direct bank loan details and revolving fund details.

N. Manohara Singh, Additional Director, Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Corporation, will be overseeing the distribution of the identity cards in Madurai and Sivaganga districts.

The gram sabha meeting discussed the objective of social auditing and how the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is being implemented in the panchayat, its efficacy and grievances too were discussed. Saradha Devi, Panchayat president, in her speech, asked the villagers who live in huts with proper pattas to apply for concrete houses under the recently announced Kalaignar Housing Scheme. The panchayat as per the directions of the Union Government from January 1 has been distributing Rs.100 as daily wage for MGREGS workers.

Grievances

During the grievance redressal session, a resident of Roja Nagar requested the panchayat to extend the Namakku Naame Thittam to areas which are not covered and also complained that streetlights are not working.

Gayathri Nagar residents complained of stray dog and pig menace in the area and also about low voltage problems.

An SHG worker from Ward No 1 complained that she was not given compensation after her hut was gutted.

The panchayat president took notice of all the grievances and promised immediate action.
