Collectors from some of the southern districts participated in a preliminary review meeting on census related works, chaired by Director (Census) S. Gopalakrishnan, at the Collectorate here on Tuesday.

According to an official press release, the first national-level census was carried out in 1872. Subsequently, in 1881, the census was taken uniformly across the nation. Since then, the exercise was being carried out in the country, every 10 years, without any interruption.

The Census 2011 would be the 15{+t}{+h} such exercise and seventh since independence, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said.

The proposed census would be carried out in two phases — household enumeration and individuals' details. The first phase would be carried out from June 1 to July 15. Specific information required as per the National Population Register (NPR) would be gathered during the enumeration. The second phase would be carried out from February 9 to 28 next year.

The meeting discussed the aim of the census and the responsibilities of enumerators and supervisors. Collectors Dinesh Ponraj Oliver (Madurai in-charge), Siji Thomas Vaidyan (Virudhunagar), Mahesan Kasirajan (Sivaganga), T.N. Hariharan (Ramanathapuram), P. Muthuveeran (Theni), M. Vallalar (Dindigul), Madurai Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine, District Revenue Officers K. Balasubramanian (Ramanathapuram), K. Petchiammal (Dindigul), P. Ganesan (Virudhunagar), Brinda Devi (Theni), A. Sivagnanam (Sivaganga) and other officers participated, the release added.
