The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has complained that normal life in Madurai city was affected for three days due to the arrangements made by DMK workers to celebrate the birthday of M.K. Alagiri, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, on Saturday.
In a statement here, the party’s urban district secretary, R. Annadurai, alleged that over 1000 hoardings were erected from Goripalayam to Raja Muthiah Mandram.
Huge illuminated structures were also kept in public places.
He wondered whether permission had been obtained from the Madurai Corporation for putting up the hoardings and arches.
The statement alleged that in many places power for the decorations were drawn directly from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board lines. “These lightings were used at a time when the government has announced that load shedding will continue for one more year. It is a wonder how the mandatory two-hour load shedding in the city was suspended on the Minister’s birthday,” Mr. Annadurai said.
Stating that the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, had advised his party men against using flex boards and indulging in extravaganza, the statement said that his advice was being violated continuously.
The welcome arches disrupted vehicular traffic in the city for three days.
