652 sovereigns recovered in the past 12-14 months

Six hundred and fifty-two sovereigns of gold jewels, 87 grams of silver articles, a car and a lorry each, 36 two-wheelers, five cycles, 265 mobile phones and Rs. 2.40 lakh cash, all valued at Rs. 1.25 crore were recovered in connection with 189 cases reported in the last 12-14 months in various police stations.

A total of 64 first-time and habitual offenders were arrested, said Commissioner of Police P. Balasubramanian here on Friday.

After handing over the properties to the rightful owners', he told reporters that 48 persons were detained under the Goondas Act so far this year.

The Commissioner said that an all-party meeting was held on Thursday in which the representatives from various political parties attended. They were informed to refrain from personal attacks during election campaign and that the police would firmly deal with complaints, he said in reply to a query.

Murder case

In the S.S. Colony woman murder case, a special team had arrested Kannan and Ramachandran alias Ramkumar alias Chandru following their confession. The properties belonging to the deceased Kayalvizhi which were missing from the house after the crime were also recovered, Mr. Balasubramanian said.

Lauding Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) V. Jeyashri and her teams for the huge recovery, he appealed to the public to take care of their belongings and be cautious while moving in public places. He assured to recover the stolen goods of other complainants soon.

Ms. Jeyashri said that out of the 335 cases registered in January-June 2010, 131 cases have been solved and the value of the goods recovered was Rs. 59 lakh. In 2009, the police had recovered lost properties valued at Rs. 65.57 lakh from 58 cases. A majority of the 64 offenders were also wanted in many crimes in other districts in the South Zone, she replied.
