An 18-month-old boy accidentally drowned in a ground-level sump in a brick kiln near Aralvaimozhi on Monday.

Police said Subhash Raj, 30, of West Bengal, who was working as a labourer in the brick kiln at Muthu Nagar along with his wife Durga, had gone to a nearby shop to purchase groceries. Ms. Durga was busy preparing lunch at home and her son Rohit was crawling around.

When she completed cooking, Ms. Durga searched for Rohit and found him drowned in a sump. She rushed the boy to Government Kanniyakumari Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
