Use of technology in crime prevention was yielding good results, said Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav.
Speaking at the third executive committee meeting of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Sunday, he said that after the launch of SOS mobile application by the city police, he said harassment and other crimes against women on the streets had reduced to a great extent.
“One of the common complaints we received earlier was regarding playing of lewd songs in share autorickshaws. That has stopped almost completely since more women are reporting such incidents through the application,” he said.
He added that effective use of government’s software tools like ‘Vahan Samanvay’ in tracking vehicles had resulted in better recovery of stolen vehicles.
Pointing to the installation of CCTV cameras at police stations, Mr. Yadav said such technological interventions had brought transparency in the functioning of police.
He said the city police had submitted a proposal for an ambitious project of bringing every street in the city under CCTV surveillance and establishing a modern command post for real-time monitoring of the feed from these cameras.
He highlighted that transformation of police force should be accompanied by adequate transformation in judiciary as well to make the entire system efficient.
Asserting that success in prevention of crime depended on participation from the public, he pointed out that around 220 people died last year in road accidents.
“Most of these acidents could have been avoided had the people worn helmets and adhered to basic traffic rules,” he said.
The meeting was hosted by R. Haresh, Managing Director of T.V. Sundaram Iyengar and Sons, in the presence of S. Rethinavelu, senior president of the chamber, and N. Jegatheesan, president.
