The Central police on Friday arrested a person on the charge of cheating a Non-Resident Keralite of lakhs in the name of securing MBBS admission for his daughter.

The accused was identified as Jobin Joy, 32, of Choornikkara in Aluva.

According to the police, the accused met the NRK, a resident of Elamkulam, when he had turned up at a famed university in Puducherry for the interview of his daughter who had received admission there.

The accused struck a friendship with the NRK, giving him the impression that he was very influential having contacts with the college management authorities and politicians. He convinced the parent that a scheme was available whereby admission could be secured for his daughter for ₹80 lakh instead of ₹1.10 crore.

Impressed by the accused, the victim transferred ₹40 lakh towards the first year’s fee to the accused’s account for payment at the college. However, the accused paid only ₹25 lakh and misappropriated the remaining amount. The victim came to know about the cheating only when his daughter informed him that she had been ousted from the class and the hostel and not allowed to sit for the intern exam because of not paying the full fees.

It also emerged that the accused had self-appointed himself as the local guardian of the student at the time of admission without the knowledge of the parents. As such, college authorities passed on all information to him of which the victim was completely unaware of.

When confronted, the accused claimed that he had paid the entire amount and that it was unaccounted for owing to some technical issues. He later promised to return the amount but kept harping on his influential contacts to delay it.

According to the police, the accused had committed similar frauds at various places, including Vaikkom, Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam.

A team led by Inspector S. Vijaysankar and sub inspectors Vibin Das and K. Sunumon made the arrest.
