A young engineer deployed at a Kochi metro work site died after he slipped and fell from a viaduct at the entry point to the Vyttila Mobility Hub on Friday morning. The incident occurred around 8.45 a.m.

The deceased was identified as Sarath, 24, of Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district. He was rushed to a city hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 12.30 p.m.

The youngster who was engaged as a site engineer with the Thrissur District Labour Contract Cooperative Society, which is entrusted with the construction of the particular stretch of the Kochi metro, had gone for supervision at the start of the day’s work when the tragedy struck.

According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) sources, Sarath was talking to workers engaged in cleaning when he reportedly lost his footing and fell down. DMRC has launched an inquiry into the accident. While DMRC sources said the engineer had safety gadgets on, it is not clear if he had used the safety hook which would have kept him suspended in mid air on an accidental fall.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) sources said they had sought a report on the incident from DMRC and will take follow-up measures based on it. The KMRL managing director always insists on the necessity of ensuring safety and security measures at construction sites during periodic visits, a KMRL spokesperson said.
