Two shutters remain open

December 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 02:51 pm IST - IDUKKI:

With two shutters remaining open, the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam stood at 141.75 ft on Wednesday evening.

An official of the Kerala State Electricity Board in charge of the Mullaperiyar dam said the inflow of water was 2,400 cusec. Tamil Nadu was drawing water at 2,000 cusecs and the remaining water was being released through the two spillway shutters into the Idukki reservoir.

Though the Theni Collector, along with his counterpart in Idukki, visited the dam on Tuesday and promised that steps would be taken to keep the water level at 141 ft, there was no official information on this on Wednesday.

The Idukki district administration wanted more water to be released to the Idukki dam to keep the water at a controlled level. It was also agreed that Tamil Nadu would inform in advance in case of opening the shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam.

Three shutters of the dam were opened on Tuesday and one of the shutters was downed on Wednesday morning, said the official. On Monday night, eight shutters of the 13-shutter spillway were opened to release water to the Idukki dam.

Mock drill

The National Disaster Response Force concluded its mock drill on rescue operations in various parts of the district on Wednesday. District Collector V. Ratheesan said there was no cause for concern as the water released was at a controlled level and the situation has eased.

Rescue shelters

Though the district administration had opened rescue shelters for affected people at Vallakadavu, Vandiperiyar, Chappathu, Upputhara, and Ayyappancoil, no one moved in there.

Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash on Wednesday evening visited the Mullaperiyar dam. He held a meeting with the District Collector and top officials at Kumily.
