The first of the two Roll-on Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) vessels to be deployed by Kochi Corporation in the Fort Kochi-Vypeen route will be ready by next May.

Mayor Tony Chammany said the second would follow suit three months later. The construction of the modern vessels is fast progressing at the Cochin Shipyard. Each vessel will cost about Rs.3.80 crore.

Unlike the existing jhankar used at present, the new ones will have double entrances and will reduced the ferrying time to just 15 minutes. The construction of two new terminals is also progressing simultaneously.

The modern double-end ferry, with propulsors and ramps at both ends, will be about 33-metre-long and capable of ferrying four lorries, 12 cars, and 50 passengers.
