The joint action council of trade unions will go in for a one-day national strike on February 28 demanding steps for controlling the rise in prices of essential commodities and creation of more employment opportunities.

Talking to media persons here on Wednesday, trade union leaders including M.M. Lawrence, Kanam Rajendran and R. Chandrasekharan said that the agitation will set a world record in terms of participation of the workers. Eleven central trade unions including INTUC, BMS, CITU, AITUC, UTUC, AIUTUC, HMS, TUCI and NLO will participate in the agitation.

Employees of Central public sector units, State and Central government employees, teachers, bank and insurance employees, defence employees and workers from various sectors will join the agitation.

Employees of various organisations in the country have issued strike notices to their respective managements, they said.

The other demands raised by the workers include strict implementation of labour laws and stern action against the violators, social security cover for employees in the unorganised sector and rolling back of the decision to privatise public sector units.

Those who took part in the press conference included V.P. George, Charles George and Philip K. Thomas.
