Soon, ‘student doctors’ in select schools across Ernakulam will impart lessons on healthy lifestyle and ill-effects of using drugs and liquor to their friends.

Junior Red Cross (JRC) units on the campuses will spearhead the unique project involving select cadets from Classes VIII to X. It will be implemented by the Ernakulam branch of Indian Red Cross Society.

“The project was formulated by Dr. Padmakumar, additional professor at T.D. Medical College, in Alappuzha. Select student doctors will get training in a wide range of areas that include first aid, epidemics, communicable and lifestyle diseases, cleanliness and road safety,” said Balakrishna Kartha, chairman of the district wing of the IRCS.

Mr. Kartha said that trained student doctors will try to inculcate better health habits among their classmates.

“The trained JRC students will also undertake social projects, including sanitation, compost pits and rainwater harvesting. Two students from Class VIII will be selected from each school for training as a preliminary step,” he said.
