February 27, 2012 07:59 pm | Updated 07:59 pm IST - KASARAGOD:

Tension prevailed at Poinachi, near here, after a place of worship came under attack on Monday as a sequel to an altercation over alleged rash riding of motorbikes accompanying a marriage party.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday as the motorcycle-borne youths engaged in an altercation with the local people who objected to their rash riding. Traffic on the National Highway was blocked for a while.

The police said the motorbike riders, who were following the marriage party from Uduma to Paramba, near Poinachi, attacked some of the local people.

Following a complaint, the police registered cases against a few of the youths.

A mosque and a madrassa in the locality were attacked early on Monday, damaging windowpanes, furniture, and study equipment.

The police have deployed additional forces. They said normality had been restored to the locality.
