A synod of the bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church got under way at the St. Thomas’ Mount, Kakkanad, near here on Monday, inaugurated by Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church Cardinal George Alencherry. The session began with a meditation led by Archbishop of Kottayam Mathew Moolakkat, said a press release here. A total of 59 bishops are participating in the synod, which will end on January 13.

The synod assumes significance in the midst of a controversy raging over the sale of land belonging to the archdiocese. The presbyteral council of the archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly has appealed to the synod to find a solution to the issues raised by several groups, including the group of priests about the sale of land and possible loss of money for the archdiocese

JCC meet

The Joint Christian Council (JCC) will organise a discussion here on bringing the land sale issues to light and on temporal property of the Church being administered as per the proposed Church Act. Former MP Sebastian Paul will inaugurate the interactions at the Children’s Park Theatre at 4 p.m.
