The government aims to turn Kerala the first State in the country to implement digitisation in the education sector before the start of the next academic year, said Education Minister C. Ravindranath here on Thursday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the activities under the eighth edition of Velicham, a comprehensive education-oriented development project being implemented in the Vypeen Assembly constituency. The project has been covering 71 aided and government schools in the constituency.

He said the project, which was a model to the entire country, was instrumental in the introduction of free insurance for all students in the State.

Mr. Ravindranath said the insurance project covering students of Classes 1 to 12 would be implemented shortly. Classes 1 to 12 will also be turned hi-tech before the start of the next academic year. Improvement in infrastructure is vital for elevating education to global standards and contributing creative minds to various fields, he added.

The government aims at creating talents by converting information collected at various levels into knowledge through its General Education Protection Campaign.

The Minister inaugurated a video-aided teaching facility project by handing over a CD to K.S. Kusumam, Deputy Director of Education. Students of LKG to Class 5 will be taught with the help of videos this academic year. He also inaugurated the Amrutham project for free distribution of breakfast to students of aided schools. The project is funded by BPCL Kochi Refinery.

Kochi Petronet LNG vice president T.S. Neelakantan handed over sponsorship worth ₹15 lakh for this academic year to the Minister.
