The construction of the LPG terminal and storage facility proposed at Puthuvype will commence soon, said District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla after a meeting of stakeholders at the collectorate.
He added that Puthuvype residents need not worry about the project and all the required safety measures will be taken.
Cooperation sought
Since there is no objection to the construction of the terminal — including no stays from courts — all stakeholders should cooperate with the project, he added.
S. Dhanapandian, representative of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), claimed that a compound wall around the terminal enabled with multi-layer security will prevent any accident that could happen in the area from spilling outside. He also claimed that the LPG terminal project will not require any acquisition of land because the IOC has taken the 37 acres required for the project on lease from the Cochin Port Trust. Central and State governments have provided all required clearances for the project. The IOC project also has environmental clearance, he claimed.
Loss for CPT
The Cochin Port Trust is facing a loss of ₹84 crore annually because the Puthuvype project is not operational yet, claimed Port Trust authorities. Kochi taluk tahsildar, members of committees protesting against the project, and Elamkunnapuzha panchayat members were among those who attended the meeting.
