About 250 autorickshaw drivers staged a protest here on Wednesday to protest against the deplorable condition of the road between Kakkanad and the Infopark, throwing traffic in the region out of gear.
According to the protesters, the authorities have not repaired the 3-kilometre-long road even six months after the Kerala Water Authority dug up its sides. “The stretch, which always witnesses heavy traffic, has become a death trap with huge pits on its side. And with the monsoon fast approaching, the authorities should initiate immediate action to address the issue,” said M.R. Ramachandran, president, Thrikkakara region Auto Drivers’ Union.
As part of the protest, the drivers also laid siege to the PWD office at Kakkanad, demanding immediate tarring of the stretch.
They are also planning to stage blockades along the stretch if the authorities fail to repair the road in a week’s time.
Meanwhile, hundreds of software employees were caught in the traffic jam that followed the protest march. Several of them reported late for work owing to the gridlock that lasted over an hour.
