Mahatma Gandhi University has started receiving online applications for admissions to the undergraduate programmes offered by the colleges affiliated to it. Admissions will be done through the centralised allotment system (CAP).
Vice-Chancellor Rajan Gurukkal inaugurated the online registration system at a function held on the university campus here on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after the inauguration, Prof. Gurukkal said that CAP would prove effective in democratising and creating transparency in allotment process to various courses offered by the colleges affiliated to the university.
“CAP would ensure that every allotment that takes place would obey all existing guidelines. Social justice and equality will also be guaranteed through the process,” he said.
Prof. Gurukkal pointed out that the process would encourage candidates in submitting applications without the fear of being misled. “A few instances of irregularities during admissions had come to the notice of the university in the past. Complaints were also received on such matters.”
He said that the response from candidates had been overwhelming. “Within an hour of commencing the process, we have received as many as 620 online applications,” he said.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Rajan Varughese, who heads the CAP implementation committee, said that the university was the first in the State to implement the centralised allotment system for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered through its affiliated colleges.
Prior to implementation of CAP, a series of deliberations were held with various stakeholders, mainly, in order to resolve any existing concerns. “Though a few objections were raised by certain quarters, the new system has received wholehearted support from most of the stakeholders,” said Dr. Varughese.
